What I do

Workshops & Community Art

Hands-on workshops, collaborative murals, and live demonstrations that bring people together through art.

It is an important aspect of chalk art to interact with the community and get patrons involved. Workshops and community murals invite everyone to pick up chalk and make something together.

As co-founder of the Georgia Chalk Artists Guild, I have taught chalk at schools, Camp Sunshine, Wonder Root, and the High Museum of Art.

Ways to work together

Ways people take part

  • Community chalk muralsEveryone gets a square of their own around a larger centerpiece, like the community mural at the Fire in the 4th celebration in Atlanta’s Old 4th Ward.
  • Camps and classesMulti-day sessions that move from a demo to independent drawing to a group piece, ending with a 3D drawing everyone colors in together.
  • Event workshopsCollaborative chalk art at games and festivals, like community art based on baseball card designs for the Atlanta Braves’ opening year.
  • Community eventsCommunity murals at Atlanta Streets Alive from 2015 to 2019.

Process and planning

How a workshop runs

At camp, the first day was a demo, and campers joined in where they wanted. Day two was all about drawing on your own: we asked the campers what they were interested in drawing and printed images for them to reference.

On the last day, I designed a camp-themed 3D chalk drawing for the kids to color in as a final lesson. Matching the grid to the drawing was a challenge, but with some help everyone figured it out and made it their own.
