    Lorem Ipsom and Other Ipsoms

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit….WHAT???

Many people in the design world use Lorem Ipsum. It can be used in many fields; print design, website design, development, wireframes and prototypes and more. It is meant to be filler copy for any design. You can generate paragraphs, lists, headlines and more. Anywhere there are words it can be used. This allows designers and developers to focus on the experience and look of the design without needing to write the actual sentences. You can customize it to any length and use different fonts to find what fits best in your design. It is perfect for when the copywriter is still working and you want to get ahead. You must always remember that content is king however. If your actual copy doesn’t fit then you will need to rework your design. Usually the designer will know if it needs to have a paragraph, single line, or list format. Copy should be able to be easily placed within a design during development phase if the lorem ipsum is accurate. It is a fine balance and requires a good designer. It all can be perfected through experience.

    Where did Lorem Ipsum originate?

Lorem Ipsum has been used since the 1500s as filler text for manuscripts. It is used because it has the most variety of lettering to explore any page layout.

  • 2015 Year In Review : Jessi & Zach

2015 Year In Review : Jessi & Zach

Jessi started off the year in a new office in Midtown. At Razorfish she worked with clients such as AT&T, Delta and she recently helped to launch the new Bridgestontire.com website. She married her one true love in May and went on the trip of a lifetime; read about our travels on ZachandJessi.com. She participated in her first international chalk festival in Sarasota Florida and created many large pieces throughout the year. She had some framed drawings on display in a local art show, Women Who Rock. She influenced some high school girls through the Women in Technology program by showing them what she does and giving them an intro to web design and agency life.

This was a big year for Zach. He started a new job at HUGE still doing QA and now Jessi and Zach work at competing digital agencies. He now can walk to work with his beautiful wife. Zach married his love on May 2nd and took her away to explore foreign lands. When he got back he went to his 11th summer of Camp Sunshine and helped kids with cancer have an awesome week. Zach officiated 6 weddings this year; that’s a record. He successfully took a course in Front End Web Dev and built Daphne a website. He read all the Mrs.Marvel comic books and is plotting to save the world with his Skybears. Zach chalked his own square and has gained some mad hand-lettering skills. Together we hit the ground running with the Georgia Chalk Artists Guild and hope to go to more festivals in 2016.[/one_half]us

    Our Travels

travelWe visited Thailand and Cambodia as part of our honeymoon. We hiked over mountains, cycled around an island, washed elephants, rode a plane with a propeller, and made new friends in restaurants and minibuses. Check out all the ways we got around below. Back home we found time to travel too. We both spent time in Austin TX for work.  Jessi visited her sister Katie in New London Connecticut and Zach went to New Jersey with work. We participated in chalk festivals in Georgia, Kentucky, and Florida. We spent the end of December and New Years Eve in New York City exploring and seeing family and friends.

    A note from Daphne

Do you know how many Daphnes fit into a home? Just one. But I has a lot of friends. This year we’ve had five friends stay with us: Wilbur, Graham, Chauncey, Gambit, and now Willis. They’ve been fun to play with because Maxwell doesn’t like to do back-flips anymore. Today I saw a squirrel. Also, I saw a hawk. That was neat. I love being with my family and chasing balls, do you know what I mean? I can’t wait for the holidays and seeing everyone. -love Daphne

Maker Faire Atlanta – 3D Chalk Art and Poster Design

This year I was given the opportunity to create the Atlanta Maker Faire poster and t-shirt designs. On top of that I was asked to be included in the event as a 3-D sidewalk chalk artist. I am very happy with the way the designs turned out and had fun trying such a large scale chalk piece.

    sketches

I always start with sketching. The Maker Faire team was looking for something Atlanta related that also incorporated activities from this year’s makers. I did some research and compiled some words and images that I thought encompassed the idea of making, doing and creating. I then took my sketches and formed them into a composition using tracing paper. I did this several times, tracing and re-tracing until I was satisfied with the design.

    I always start with sketching.

  • Happy Howl-O-Weenie!!!

    Happy Howl-O-Weenie!!!

Dachshunds, weenie dogs, teckel, hot dog puppies! You name it we got it at Howl-o-weenie! Dream Rescue of Atlanta is a dog rescue group focused in saving lives of dachshunds everywhere. They run solely on foster care and do not have a facility. This allows them to help with overcrowding in animal shelters and humane societies. It is overcrowding that leads to the unnecessary euthanasia of perfectly healthy and loving furry friends. There are many homeless doxies in the southeast. Dream even has to turn some of them away due to lack of resources. This is so sad and the exact reason it is so important to support them.

But, this post is not meant to be preachy. I want to share with you the good that can come out of a support system like DREAM Rescue and show you how I use my talents to do what I can to bring awareness. I want to encourage you to do the same. I am a firm believer that we all have a purpose and can help in some little way. Even if helping dogs in need is not your passion, maybe you want to make a child with cancer smile, donate to the homeless, or help to clean our world by picking up trash or recycling. You can use what you have to make the world a wonderful place for yourself and those who will follow in your footsteps.

Anyways, back to Howl-O-Weenie! With Halloween right around the corner, we do what we can to bring our doxie lovers out to support this cause. Howl-O-Weenie is a very large event and is an opportunity to have fun while spreading awareness. This year I volunteered to create the t-shirt design. They did so well and sold out at the event very quickly! They also put my design on a glass to sell beer at the event. It was such a fun time! Here are the highlights…

    drawing

DREAM Rescue wanted a wordle for the t-shirt design and asked me to make it. First I gathered a list of words that described our short legged friends and I sketched it out into the shape of a dachshund.

    Adobe Illustrator File

In Adobe Illustrator I was able to use my wacom tablet to trace over my sketch. The design had original hand drawn words as well as typed font.

    tshirt

I am quite pleased to see how it turned out. I am glad I was able to create something that would bring joy to people as well as awareness for DREAM. Not to mention all the money that these shirts raised for the cause.

    Chalk Drawing

I did a small sample chalk drawing. I kept it short and sweet because we all know Howl-o-Weenie is a very busy day!

And now for our favorite part, the costume contest!! Zach slaved away making Angry Bird Costumes for Daphne and Maxwell. Our adult costumes were store bought.

Maxwell is our foster dog. This means that we keep him until he gets adopted. If you want to know more about him visit his pet finder profile.

Our #doxieposse twitter friends were there as the Three Doxie-teers! Browse more photos of costumes from Howl-O-Weenie!

The events of the day also included a dachshund race, costume contest, hot dog eating contest, face licking contest and a howling contest. There were venders and dogs for adoption. Food and beer was also for sale. It was such a wonderful time!

Maxwell and Daphne showed their twitter friend Reagan how to climb a mountain!

    Chalk In the News

    SCAD Street Art Festival 2007
    SCAD Street Art Festival 2007

Passion for chalk art was instilled at an early age. As just a high schooler in 2007, I became a chalk artist when I first drew on the sidewalk at the annual SCAD Street Art Festival. I enjoyed all the talent and the fast paced nature of the event. I was privileged to attend art high school Savannah Arts Academy and received extensive training in the visual arts. The program prepared me to attend an art college.

Growing up in Savannah, the influence was all around me. I had dreams of attending SCAD and eventually made those a reality at the Atlanta campus. I traveled back to Savannah each year to participate in the festival. I still do now as an alumni.

In 2011 I took my skills to the streets chalking for local businesses such as The Melting Pot. Zach Herndon and I would chalk for charity events every weekend. We would create large 20-40 ft drawings. Each one had a theatrical theme for the dinner and show. We enjoyed putting the talent to use in this way. All I wanted to do was chalk more. I applied to chalk at the Marietta Chalk Festival hosted by the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art. I was super excited for the opportunity.

I was interviewed by the AJC in preparation for the Marietta Chalk Festival coming up this weekend. Here is a snippet from the article by Jon Waterhouse:

Q: What do you like best about chalk art?

A: I like being outdoors and working with an environment rather than just inside in a studio. It’s a lot nicer to be able to share my art and get the exposure and share it with other people. The chalk pastel medium has always been my preference. It’s fun to blend, easy to work with and your hands get dirty.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the process?

A: It’s kind of a rush knowing that I have this certain amount of time that I need to get this art piece done before it rains or whatever. If it rains, I can come back and do it again. There’s this one piece that I did that was for the Melting Pot restaurant on Peachtree Street. They commissioned me to do one for the “Mamma Mia” show at the Fox (Theatre). They have a charity where they have kids come, eat dinner and go to a show at the Fox, so I would draw for that. The “Mamma Mia” one washed away, so I had to come back the next day and draw it again. Each time I drew it, it was a little bit different.

Q: What are you going to be drawing this weekend?

A: I’m drawing a Civil War scene about Kennesaw Mountain. It’s kind of complicated, so you’re going to have to come out and see it. It’s going to be an Atlanta scene, and I’m going to have a phoenix coming out of the flames, so it’s going to be symbolic as well as visual.

Marietta Chalk Festival August 30, 2013

I went to the chalk festival expecting it to be small like the one in Savannah but it was so much bigger with professional chalk artists from all over the southeast US. I quickly realized that I was in over my head but it only fueled my passion. I learned that people travel for chalk art and made that my goal. This was only the beginning.

The event rained out but I enjoyed chalking with so many talented people and getting introduced to this chalk world. I plan to continue to grow as an artist and chalk every chance I get.

    Facebook and Google!

When we went to San Francisco this summer we had the pleasure of touring the Facebook Headquarters and the Downtown Google Campus. Our friend Peter is an application engineer at Facebook. He is so talented and smart. He really is enjoying Cali life and shared his workplace with us. Facebook is like Disney World. That is all it can be compared to that I am familiar with. When you enter there is a really long street in the middle that has buildings on all sides. Some have garage doors to let a little air in; you know in case your meeting gets a little stuffy! There are bicycles that you can grab and just bike from one end to the other. It was such an amazing place. Check out my photos!

    IMG_4826

They have kitchens in every building with fridges full of anything you could possibly want! I was overjoyed that they had Babybels!! Other items included packs of gum, Starbucks coffee drinks, red bulls, and chips of all kinds. It was paradise! They also had vending machines with mouses and keyboards and batteries. All free for employees!

    IMG_4827

They have treadmill desks!! Literally a desk that you can exercise at! I think this is brilliant!

    IMG_4828

This meeting room is called “Enders Game” based off an Orson Scott Card novel. I love how colorful the meeting rooms were.

    IMG_4829

There was Facebook art on all the walls and they had little lobbies with lounges for relaxing.

This is us in the central road/walkway. This runs down the middle with eateries and shopping! You can grab a bike and ride too. We did that and it was so fun!

  • Animal Rescue Idea

The iterative design process is one that many designers take for granted.  It is more helpful than one would imagine. The first step is the ideation process.  Ideas are inspired by life events.

I spent the weekend at home and helped my younger sister volunteer with her Girl Scout troop at the Gainesville Humane Society. I had to hold my tears back in front of the girls when we entered the big dog kennel. You could tell that these dogs had been abused in some way or another.  They were frightened and had sad begging eyes. We took the puppies out for walks and sadly returned them to their cages. The day ended with some girls in tears and others begging to take the dogs home. I was one of the begging ones, sending pictures via text message to my mom of the sad doggy faces…

Later on I thought to myself, there are so many people who are unaware of what goes on. I went online to researched and broke down when I learned about puppy mills and kill shelters. I wondered how long they would hold those dogs in the shelter in Gainesville until it was too late and they were put to death… It is a horrifying situation and one that we all should be aware of. But mostly we should all be aware that we can make a difference, at least in some little way.

So I put my skills to use and came up with the idea to make a mobile interface that will bring social pet lovers as well as animal rescue personnel together into one place to help our feline friends. It will be informative as well as a social place for pet lovers to interact with one another.  First step was sketching…

The next step was to create a prototype. Prototypes are important and should never be excluded.  The first one should be on paper. It should be rough and player testing should be loose in this initial step. Ideas can be thrown out or kept. This step helps to decide the scope and what is necessary for the interface.  Design is an ongoing process…

The steps of interactive design are unique in that user testing is a must. The target audience must be defines and a set of design values must be the main focus. I will continue the process and blog my results. I am looking forward to the outcome. The final product will be a mobile website.
